TIPS when choosing the size of the brake cylinder!
If you want to get an idea of how small of a brake cylinder you can use for the brake calipers then you need to know how much brake fluid is required to move the piston a certain distance. The first thing to do is measure up the piston area in the brake caliper, this is done according to the following formula: Pi x Radius x Radius = Cubic Millimeters.
If we take a 54 mm piston as an example then the piston area is: Pi (3.14) x 27 mm x 27 mm = 2289 square millimeters = 2289 cubic millimeters per millimeter stroke (for it to move 1 mm distance).
Moreover, 2289 cubic millimeters = 0.02289 deciliters.
The calculation above must be multipled for the number of pistons you have!
Note! If you have a single piston caliper, it counts as a two piston caliper! However, if you have a caliper with multiple pistons with different piston sizes, you calculate the piston area separately on the different sizes.
Summary: In the above example, therefore, a single piston caliper (with 54 mm piston) needs 2289 cubic millimeters of brake fluid to move 1 mm. If you connect two single piston calipers to a main cylinder, you have four brake pistons which then becomes 2289 mm3 x 4 = 9156 cubic millimeters to move the brake caliper pistons 1 mm.
NOTE! Important to remember! Usually, the total stroke of the main cylinder is not used in a brake bias system, some margin is good to have.
