ASS Gearbox beam for BMW gearbox ZF and Getrag in Volvo 740 / 760 / 940 / 960
This new generation gearbox beam fits bolt on in the Volvo 700 and 900 series and can be attached in many ways longitudinally and therefore now fits most variants of manual gearboxes from BMW.
Both 5 and 6-speed gearboxes from both ZF and Getrag. For the later 6-speed gearboxes from around 2000 with a loose bracket at the back of the gearbox, you need to supplement with this bracket: https://houseofmotorsport.com/en/produkter/ass-crossmember-bracket-bmw-zf-6spd-volvo-240-740-940/
Also fits with the DCT gearbox GS7D36SG if supplemented with this bracket: https://houseofmotorsport.com/en/produkter/ass-crossmember-bracket-bmw-getrag-dct-gs7d36sg-volvo-240-740-940/
See example pictures with measurements to check that it fits your gearbox.
This new gear beam is made to fit bolt on with our gimbal retaining ring found here: https://houseofmotorsport.com/en/produkter/ass-drive-shaft-safety-loop-zf-getrag-volvo-240-740-940/
ATTENTION!
– The larger gearboxes usually require cutting away certain spills in the gearbox and also knocking out space in the gearbox tunnel.
– Always check that the cardan runs in a straight line against the support bearing after assembly. Otherwise, the hard disk may wear out prematurely.
– There are different inclinations on BMW’s petrol engines and diesel engines. But you can e.g. don’t put a diesel gearbox on an M50 even if they fit together because the gearbox will then tilt 10 degrees if you don’t re-weld it.
– If the gearbox used is modified with a new sweep that is welded, this must be well done and with the correct slope for it to fit perfectly.
In order for the drive shaft support bearing holder to end up at the right height with the different engine options, there are 4 thick washers that can be mounted in different ways. Most often, you use two of the washers between the support bearing holder and its attachment plate to raise the bearing (see the arrows in picture 1).
In some cases, the support bearing instead needs to be moved down and you then need to use the 4 washers between the attachment plate for the support bearing holder and the body (see those circles in picture 1). It is difficult to say exactly when the spacers should be used and in what way because all the different combinations differ and it depends on where longitudinally the gearbox bracket is located.
Examples of when support bearings need to be raised:
Volvo B23/B230, Volvo 5-6 cyl white engine, BMW M50/M52/M54, Mercedes M104/M103/OM603/OM606
Example of when washers are not needed at all:
Toyota 2JZ
Example of when support bearings need to be lowered:
BMW M60/M62
To be sure that you have the correct line on the drive shaft, make sure that the engine and gearbox are seated as they should be. Then mount the drive shaft carrier against the gearbox carrier with some form of solid spacers in between, e.g. large nuts. You can tell if you got it right if the drive shaft spins around its own axis or if it “wobbles”. It should spin evenly around its axis. When it’s done, you can clearly see if the support bearing is at the right height. The bearing can sit +/- 3 millimeters without any problems if you use a universal joint made of rubber, but the straighter the less stress on the universal joint.
Examples of gearboxes with fixed rear attachment that fit:
S5D-250G
S5D-260Z
S5D-310Z
S5D-320Z

Examples of gearboxes that fit where you need to supplement with a rear loose attachment on the gearbox:
GS6-37DZ or -BZ
GS6-53DZ or -BZ
GS7D36SG
Manufactured in 4mm high-strength steel sheet and electro-galvanized matt black.
Incl. rubber pads, screw and spacers for support bearings.
